Colic occurs when a baby cries for extended periods of time for no specific reason. The baby has been fed, changed, and he isn't sick, but yet he cries. Comforting a baby with colic is no easy task, however, it is important to make every attempt to soothe your baby during this time. Calming a colicy infant takes patience, but there are ways to do it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bathe your baby. Give him a warm bath with a baby wash that contains lavender. Lavender will help to relax him and hopefully help him to fall asleep.

  2. Step 2

Place the baby in his swing. Allow it to swing slowly, but constant. If the baby seems to enjoy it, let him stay in the swing for awhile until he calms down. He may calm down after a few minutes, or he may fall asleep.

  3. Step 3

Carry the baby around in a baby sling. This sling allows the baby to snuggle close with you and is very comforting. Babies love to be cuddled, so this may make her calm down. You can continue doing light house work while the baby is snuggled next to you.

  4. Step 4

Take the baby for a car ride. Strap the baby into his car seat first. Turn on some soft music and ride around for about 20 to 30 minutes until he calms down or falls asleep. The vibration from the car is very soothing to babies and they often fall asleep after about 5 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Rock your baby. Snuggle her close to you. Sit on a sofa or a bed and rock back and forth. You may also want to sing to the baby while you are rocking.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your baby doesn't calm down after multiple failed attempts, contact the doctor.
