How to Wear Colored Contact Lenses

  1. Step 1

Make an appointment with an optometrist. He will determine whether you need corrective or noncorrective lenses. Your eye shape will also be measured.

  2. Step 2

Decide on how much color you want. An enhancement tint lens will enhance or deepen your eye color without changing it. These are best for people with light-colored eyes. In contrast, an opaque, color-tinted lens will completely change your eye color. Thus, the effect will be far more dramatic. For Halloween and other costume-type of events, you can choose theatrical lenses, which can make you look like an alien or other strange character.

  3. Step 3

Choose between disposable and nondisposable lenses. Nondisposable lenses can be worn for one year. If you plan to wear your colored contact lenses on a daily basis, these are a good idea. Disposable contacts can be worn for about one week, and no longer than six hours a day. These are good if you are just using them for cosmetic purposes.

  4. Step 4

Choose your colors. To subtlely enhance light blue eyes, choose an aqua or dark blue shade. People with brown eyes can use a hazel-toned contact lens for subtle color enhancement. Honey-colored lenses will add drama to light-colored eyes. People with dark hair and dark eyes should opt for dramatic shades such as green amethyst and sapphire.

  5. Step 5

Soak and cleanse your contacts according to instructions. These may differ for each brand.

  6. Step 6

Wash your hands before applying your lenses.

  7. Step 7

Apply your makeup after applying your lenses. Use hypoallergenic makeup.

  8. Step 8

    Cleanse your lenses after use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Carry some eye drops with you, in case your eyes dry up throughout the day. Carry a lens case and some soaking solution. If a lens falls out, you will need to clean it.
  • Never borrow another person's contact lenses. Remove your lenses if your eyes become sensitive to light. It is difficult to read while wearing contact lenses. You might need to bring your reading glasses with you.
