Aluminum windows frames form a tight seal and provide more soundproofing than vinyl windows. They're durable and strong and require little maintenance. They can be purchased pre-painted or you may choose to paint them to match your decor. Aluminum window frames can be quickly and easily spruced up with a little prep work and a couple of coats of paint. Whether you want to change the color or cover up damage, here's how to paint aluminum window frames.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the window frames with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse well with hot water, and dry with a clean cloth.

    • 2

Get rid of difficult stains and grease by spraying on a thin coat of WD 40. Use a toothbrush to scrub spots. Wipe with a clean, soft cloth. Be sure to remove all of the residue from the cleaning process.

    • 3

Use painter's tape or masking tape to protect the glass or screens. If you're using spray paint, cover the glass or screen with newspapers and tape it securely.

    • 4

Apply a metal primer or a self-etching primer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Let dry.

    • 5

Paint the aluminum with either interior or exterior paint, depending on which side you're working on. Let dry and apply another coat.

    • 6

Remove the tape by slowly pulling it away from the painted area at an angle. Use a razor knife to scrape up any paint that spilled or seeped onto the glass under the tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Grease left on the frames before painting can bleed through over time.
