How to Make Flubber Without Starch

Flubber is a soft, stretchy substance. It is not moldable like Play-Doh, but children love to roll and stretch it.
Creating flubber is a fun interactive craft to do with your children. To make flubber, all you need is a few simple household ingredients and a few common kitchen utensils. There is no cooking necessary, and the entire process should take about 20 minutes.
The flubber mixture is so easy that older children can put it together by themselves. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children because it is messy and caution should be taken with the borax.
Flubber is very sticky; cleanup requires soap and water.

Instructions

  1. Making the Flubber

    • 1

Completely cover the work surface with newspaper. Place both bowls on the work surface.
Fill the measuring cup to the 1 1/2 mark with warm water. Pour the warm water into the first bowl. Squeeze the Elmer's glue into the measuring cup to equal 2 cups. Pour the 2 cups of glue into the warm water. Mix water and glue until combined.
At this point if you want, several drops of food coloring can be added to the mix.

    • 2

Scoop out 4 tsp. of borax into the second bowl. After the borax is in the bowl, add 1/3 cup warm water. Stir the borax and water with the mixing spoon until the borax is dissolved.

    • 3

Take the glue and water mixture and pour it into the bowl that contains the borax mixture. Let the new mixture sit for a few minutes.

    • 4

Using your hands, mix the two solutions together in the bowl. The mixture will start to come together into one large, sticky ball. After a few minutes of mixing, you should have a large glob of squishy flubber.
The flubber can be divided into individual portions or left as one big blob.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not let children eat flubber. Flubber is extremely sticky; wear old clothes when working with it.
