Stop, Drop and Roll is something all children should know!

It is important to teach children about fire safety. Making them knowledgeable about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire can save their lives.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Teach children the importance of practising fire safety. The best way to teach fire safety is to practice fire safety! Some very important fire safety tips to remember are:
    - Never leave cooking food or burning candles unattended
    - Keep candles away from anything that could accidentally catch fire.
    - ALWAYS keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children

  2. Step 2

Discuss your fire safety plan and make sure kids know where your meeting place is. Make sure they know exactly what they need to do in the event of a fire and that they should NOT stay behind to look for a pet or favorite toy.

  3. Step 3

Practice what to do in the event of a fire by having fire drills. Have these drills without warning and actually have everyone leave the house and meet at the designated meeting place. Praise your children for a job well done!

  4. Step 4

Show children how to check the doors for heat by feeling with the BACK OF THEIR HAND. Stress to them how important it is for them to check the door before opening it and NOT to open the door if it feels warm.

  5. Step 5

Teach children how to Stop Drop & Roll if their clothes catch fire. Make sure they know to drop quickly and roll back and forth fast to extinguish the flames quickly.

  6. Step 6

Kids should also be shown how to block their doorway with blankets or clothes if smoke is coming into the room.

  7. Step 7

Tell them to never, ever hide if there is a fire. Tell them to make sure they stay out in the open and never hide in a closet or under the bed. Show them pictures of fire fighters dressed in their gear so they know what they look like. Fire fighters can look very scary to children.

  8. Step 8

Instruct them to crawl on their hands and knees if there is a lot of smoke.
