How to Make Electro Magnets

How to Make Electro Magnets thumbnail
Electromagnet

It is the fourth grade science experiment that puts real power in the hands of the students. Nothing explains magnets and magnetic fields as well as a little hands-on effort. With just a few, simple, easy to find parts, the young scientist can turn something ordinary into something extraordinarily powerful: an electromagnet.

Things You'll Need

  • 3-foot bare copper wire
  • Steel Nail
  • Size D Cell Battery
  • Scotch Tape
  • Several paper clips

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the nail in one hand and the bare wire in the other. Start about three inches into the bare wire and wrap it around the nail in tight, even circles. Overlap as necessary.

    • 2

Leave about three inches unconnected at the other end as well.

    • 3

Attach one end of your wire to the positive end of your battery and secure with tape.

    • 4

Attach the other end of the battery to the negative end of the battery and secure with tape.

    • 5

Hold the nail over the paper clips to witness the power of your electromagnet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Further the experiment by alternating what you pick up. Metal filings, pins and the like are good examples of what your electomagnet will pick up, but don't forget to include some things that it will not pick up. You can also switch the "D" battery for a 6 volt battery for a more powerful electromagnet.
