Labrador retriever puppy

Cute and cuddly. Soft and sweet. It's no wonder why the labrador is one of the most popular canine breeds in the United States. Originally bred as a working dog in Canada, the labrador also makes an ideal family pet. Labradors are active, intelligent, and easily trainable. Just like any other puppy, labrador pups need a balanced diet to ensure their growth and health. A puppy should be given high-quality food and fresh clean water every day.

Instructions

  1. Feeding your labrador puppy

    • 1

Purchase puppy food. Since a puppy's stomach is often sensitive, give your pup the same food that your breeder uses. If you adopted your puppy from a shelter, look for brands with the wording "a complete and balanced diet" since only companies who adhere to AAFCO standards can use this phrase. Only buy food that is specifically geared for puppies and that has a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals.

    • 2

Provide clean water. Make sure your puppy has access to fresh water.

    • 3

Feed your puppy. Give your dog 3/4 - 1 cup of food, three times a day (morning, afternoon, and evening). Allow your puppy to eat for 20 minutes and then take the food away.

    • 4

Adjust food intake. As your puppy grows, he will need to eat more food. Increase each meal by 1/4 cup if your puppy consistently finishes every meal.

    • 5

Lessen the number of feedings. Between 4-6 months of age, your puppy will need only two meals a day. Give your puppy the same amount of food as before but feed her once in the morning and once at night.

    • 6

Talk to your veterinarian. Speak with your vet if you think your puppy is overweight or underweight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feed your puppy on a consistent schedule. Try to feed him around the same time every day.

  • Don't overfeed your puppy. Labradors can be ravenous eaters so consult with your veterinarian if you think your dog is gaining too much weight.
