How to use a Canon EOS Rebel XT

Digital SLR cameras come with a lot of functions that allow you to customize pictures and get that perfect shot. With all of those options, just getting started can seem complicated, but you don't have to know a lot about the ins and outs of the SLR to start taking pictures. The Canon EOS Rebel XT is a good choice for a digital SLR camera for those who want to capture high quality photographs without spending a fortune.

Things You'll Need

  • Canon EOS Rebel XT camera
  • Insert the battery, attach the lens and insert the memory card. All of these components will come separate and you must have each properly installed for the camera to work. The battery door and slot for the memory card are clearly marked, and there are colored guides on the camera body to attach the lens. Just line up the colored mark on the body with the same colored mark on the lens and twist into place.

  • Turn the camera on. The switch is on the top right hand side of the camera and is clearly marked with 'On' and 'Off'. The LCD screen should come on.

  • Set the focus mode to AF. The switch is on the front of the camera, on the ring just behind the lens. This will set your camera to automatic focus.

  • Set the mode dial to 'Full Auto'. The mode dial is the dial directly beside the on and off switch on the top of the camera. The 'Full Auto' setting is designated by a rectangle symbol. This will allow the camera to automatically set all necessary settings, including the f-stop and shutter speed. In 'Full Auto' mode, the flash will also come up automatically in low light. To turn the flash off, turn the mode dial to the lightning bolt with a line through it. More advanced photographers may choose to set the camera to 'Manual' and change all of these settings themselves. If so, the shutter speed can be set using the dial just behind the shutter button, the f-stop can be set by holding down the 'AV +/-' button on the upper right hand side of the LCD screen while turning the same dial. The flash will not automatically pop up in 'Manual' mode. If you would like to use the flash, press the lighting bolt button on the left hand side of the front of the camera.

  • Focus on the subject. Look through the viewfinder of the camera and frame your shot. Press the shutter button halfway down. The shutter button is located on the top right of the camera at the very front. Your shot should come into focus.

  • Take the photograph. Press the shutter button down completely to capture the image.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to order a memory card. The camera doesn't come with one, but you will need it to take photos. Review the pictures on your memory card by using the 'Play' button on the camera. It is located at the lower right hand side of the viewfinder and is designated by a solid arrow symbol.
