How to Change the Spark Plug in a Gas Golf Cart

A spark plug is responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture that the engine uses to produce power. A carburetor that delivers an incorrect air-fuel mixture can prematurely foul a spark plug. Even if the engine is properly turned and maintained, the effectiveness of a spark plug gradually decreases with repeated use. Golf carts are particularly susceptible to this problem because a golf cart only has one spark plug. Once that spark plug wears out, the fuel efficiency of the golf cart will be severely diminished, as well as the power its engine produces. Replacing a golf cart's single spark plug is an easy task.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the golf cart's engine is cool, as a severe burn can otherwise result.

    • 2

Remove the spark plug's wire from the tip of the spark plug. Pull the wire away from the plug; a stubborn spark plug wire might first have to be twisted by hand to break it free from the plug.

    • 3

Remove the spark plug from the engine. Turn the plug in a counterclockwise direction with a ratchet wrench affixed with a deep socket.

    • 4

Gap the plug. The distance between the metal tip of the plug and the metal hook which sits just above this tip must be a specified distance. Refer to the owner's manual to determine the proper gap setting. To measure the gap, insert a feeler gauge set to the proper setting between the tip of the plug and the metal hook. If the distance between these two points is greater than required, press down on the hook; if the distance is too small, use the hook on the side of the feeler gauge to pry the hook away from the plug. Measure the distance with the feeler gauge until the proper distance is achieved.

Install the new spark plug into the engine. Use the ratchet wrench with the deep socket to turn the spark plug in a clockwise direction.

    • 6

Install the spark plug's wire to complete the replacement. Press the wire onto the end of the spark plug until the wire fits securely.
