The standard cables that come with an Xbox 360 game console allow for a connection to HDTVs and standard definition TVs with just the flick of a switch. Various issues can cause the video to improperly show on the connected TV--or not show at all. Resetting the display settings and properly connecting the component cables will resolve most video issues with the Xbox 360 console.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Connect the Xbox 360 component cables by the corresponding colors. The video component cables consist of four dark gray with colored tips cables, and the audio are two colored cables.

  2. Step 2

Plug in the green, blue and red tipped cables into the corresponding colored spots on the TV.

  3. Step 3

Plug in the yellow and white cables into their corresponding colored spots, making a total of five plugs in the TV unit.

  4. Step 4

Switch the component cable connector to either "HDTV" or "TV," depending on what type of TV is connected to the Xbox 360 console. The connector is what attaches to the back of the game console.

  5. Step 5

Reset the display settings by turning the Xbox 360 off and turn the console back on with the first player controller.

  6. Step 6

Press and hold the "Y" button and pull the right trigger at the same time as the Xbox controller connects to the game system. The system should now display video, or there may be incorrect settings on the connected TV.

Tips & Warnings
  • For standard definition TV, plug in only the red, white and yellow cables into their corresponding colored spots.
  • The Xbox 360 will restart after resetting the display settings on the console. Wait for it to properly shut down and stop making noise before attempting to turn it back on if it does not do so on its own.
