Make sure there is butane fluid in the lighter, then open the lid of the lighter.

Check the condition of the wick. If it is blackened, pull it straight up with needle nose pliers until you begin to see white wick. Cut off the blackened portion of the wick so that the wick is at the same level as the chimney that surrounds it.
As long as the lighter makes a spark, you can assume the flint is in acceptable condition for lighting the lighter.

Rotate the flint wheel with the thumb quickly to create a flame.

Hold the flint wheel down to continue the flame.

Release the flint wheel and close the lighter to extinguish the flame.

Juppy is absolutely correct! Another error is: Zippos do not use butane (which is gaseous) but lighter FLUID (which is just that -- a FLUID) poured or squirted into cotton wadding around the enexposed length of the wick) in the body which then keeps the wick doused.
