Gene dolls are beautiful collectibles that can be handed down from generation to generation. Often, though, these dolls are stored incorrectly in basements or attics, and take on a musty odor. Removing the bad odor is an easy process, but should be undertaken with care, to avoid lowering the integrity of these collectibles.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

If your Gene doll smells musty, chances are, it is from mildew growing on the doll somewhere. Remove the doll's clothes.

  2. Step 2

Check the doll for mildew spots. If you find spots on the clothing, you may wash the clothing on the delicate cycle. Simply add baking soda to the washing machine and run as usual.

  3. Step 3

Do not place doll clothes in the dryer. Rather, spread them out on a towel and turn a regular oscillating fan on them to dry. Dry thoroughly to prevent odors from returning.

  4. Step 4

If there are mildew stains on the doll itself, fill a spray bottle with 3 parts water to 1 part household bleach.

  5. Step 5

Spray the doll to dampen it. Then, working with the damp cloth, gently buff the vinyl parts of the doll until all spots are removed. Rinse with water and then dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store dolls in a clean, cool, dry place to preserve them. Try placing them in a linen closet, rather than a damp basement.
  • If a warning against water or cleaning is located anywhere on the doll, bring it to a dry cleaner for cleaning instead of attempting it yourself.
