Having extra crib sheets in the house can come in handy for mom and baby. Some days you may need to change the sheet several times and the last thing you want to do is a load a laundry just for one crib sheet. Making crib sheets is an easy project and can save you a lot of money. You can make them yourself even if you can't sew. It should take less than an hour to complete your sheet.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure your crib mattress. The standard crib mattress is 27 1/2 by 54 1/2 inches, but they are all different depths. You need to measure the length plus the two sides, plus 3 inches. Then measure the width, plus the two sides, plus 3 inches. Cut the fabric to your measurements.

  2. Step 2

To fit the sheet, place the fabric on the mattress and fold the sides to make corners. Pin in place and then sew the folds on the sewing machine, right sides of the material together, sewing on the wrong side. If you can not sew, skip this step.

  3. Step 3

Fold over the raw edge about 1/4 inch and then again 1/2 inch. Sew the hem, all the way around the raw edge, leaving the last inch open. If you can't sew, iron the hem in with hem tape, but make sure to leave a sleeve in the hem.

  4. Step 4

Feed a thin piece of elastic about 80 inches long through the hem by attaching it to a safety pin and working it through a little at a time. Attach the other end of the elastic to the opening with a second safety pin to hold it in place.

  5. Step 5

When you get the first end of elastic through the hem, hold the two ends together and remove the safety pins. Sew the two ends of the elastic together. Sew the inch of open hem closed. Your sheet is finished.
