Yahoo Messenger is an instant messenger chat client. Friends, family and employees can stay connected through an easy-to-use interface. Some companies use Yahoo Messenger to communicate between locations and hold meetings. Windows 2000 users can still use Yahoo Messenger. New versions are listed as Windows XP/Windows Vista, but can still be used on Windows 2000. You can also download older versions for better compatibility. Yahoo Messenger is am efficient way to stay connected to friends and family while online, and is easy to install.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download either the latest version of Yahoo Messenger or an older version. (See Resources.) If you aren't interested in the latest frills--such as better emoticons, stealth mode and larger file share sizes--you can download a less memory-intensive or older version. Choose version 5.0 or higher for best results.

  2. Step 2

Double-click the installation file you downloaded to begin the installation.

  3. Step 3

Close any older versions of Yahoo Messenger you may have running. This will only be necessary if you are upgrading to a new version. Click "Next."

  4. Step 4

Click "I Accept" to accept the user agreement. Choose "Next" to install in the default location, or click "Browse" to choose another installation location.

  5. Step 5

Click "Next" to install. Click "Finish" when the installation is complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • Yahoo can import contacts from your Yahoo email to create a buddy list. This is easiest for most users. You will automatically be prompted the first time you start Yahoo Messenger.
  • Some new versions of Yahoo Messenger are bundled with a search toolbar. You can choose not to install it by unchecking the installation box for the toolbar.
