How to Make a USA Flag

Making a USA flag can be done by sewing the pieces together or by using fabric paint and painting the flag onto a large piece of fabric. The following instructions tell you how to paint a flag on a large piece of fabric. If you would like a smaller flag, simply reduce the measurements accordingly. To hang the American flag, add grommets to the left side of the flag after it has dried.

Things You'll Need

• White fabric 3 feet by 5 feet
• Hot iron
• Sewing machine
• Thread
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Straight edge
• Red fabric paint
• Paintbrush
• Flat piece of plastic, 2-inch square
• Scissors
• Blue fabric paint

Instructions

1. 

   Lay the white fabric horizontally, so that the width is 5 feet. Iron out all of the wrinkles. Roll up a ¼-inch hem along the entire perimeter of the flag and stitch the hem with a sewing machine to finish the edges. Iron the edges flat.

2. 

   Mark 12 evenly spaced hash marks along the right side of the fabric, using a pencil. They will be spaced between 2½ and 2¾ inches. The actual amount will depend on the width of the hem you stitched around the fabric.

3. 

   Count down to the seventh line and draw a horizontal line across the fabric. The line should be parallel to the top and bottom edge of the flag.

4. 

   Draw a box in the left-hand corner of the fabric. It will be 28-inches wide. The top line of the box will be the top edge of the flag, and the bottom line of the box will be the line drawn in Step 3.

5. 

   Draw 12 parallel lines across the flag, using the hash marks as the location for each line. Use a ruler and a straight edge to make the lines parallel and evenly spaced. Do not draw in the square.

6. 

   Paint seven red stripes on the flag. Begin at the top of the flag and fill in the space from the upper right corner to the first line. Leave the space between the next two lines white, and then paint another line. Continue until there are seven red stripes, each separated by a white stripe. There should be a red stripe on the top and bottom of the flag. Do not paint in the square. Allow the paint to dry.

7. 

   Make a five-pointed star template on the piece of plastic. The star should be 2 by 2 inches. Cut out the template.

8. 

   Draw 50 stars in the box by tracing the template. Evenly space the stars. There should be nine staggered lines. The top line will have six stars, the next line will have five stars, the third line will have six stars and so on. Paint the area blue in the box, surrounding the stars. Allow to dry.
