How Often Should You Regrip Your Golf Clubs?

A worn and decaying golf club grip can cause the club to wobble and become unwieldy in the hands of even a skilled golfer, and if the condition is poor enough, it can cause the club to slip out of its grip during a swing. Grips wear out with use, heat, moisture and even just time. Replacing them at the appropriate time is the best way to ensure that your clubs will feel solid and secure when you need them.

From Quick Guide: Golf Clubs for Beginners
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Golf clubs
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper
  • Golf bag
  • Golf glove or gloves
  1. Step 1

Examine your golf club grips as-is to determine if they're in need of replacement. Begin by just looking closely. Are the seams on the grip separating? Are there any visible tears or peeling sections? Feel the grooves in the grip. Do the recessed areas offer more grip than the raised areas? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," you should replace the grips soon.

  2. Step 2

Take a few practice swings after the visual inspection to see how the clubs feel in your hands. If the clubs feel somewhat loose inside the grips, the grips should be replaced as soon as possible. If the finish on the outside of the grip isn't gripping your hands well enough for you to be able to swing the club while holding it loosely, they're ready for replacement.

  3. Step 3

Put a pen or pencil and paper inside your golf bag. Every time you have your clubs regripped, note it on the paper and record the date.

  4. Step 4

Make a hash mark on your regripping record every time you play nine or more holes so that you know how much playing you've done on each set of grips.

  5. Step 5

Keep tabs on this log throughout the golf season. Replace the grips after one year or 40 rounds, whichever comes first. The exception to this would be if you rarely use your clubs and you store them very well in a climate-controlled environment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Help your grips last longer by keeping them in a cool environment whenever they're not in use; don't keep them in your car for extended periods of time. Keep your grips out of direct sunlight whenever possible. Do not store your golf clubs with wet grips, as this will accelerate their decay. Wear a golf glove or gloves during play to prevent oils and sweat from getting on your grips and causing deterioration.
  • If you swing a golf club with a loose grip, the club can come flying right out of the grip.
