How to Make Your Own Deodorant With Aloe and Guar Gum

It is fairly easy and safe to make your own custom deodorants from a mix of guar gum and aloe-vera gel and the essential oils of aromatic plants. Guar gum is a nontoxic emulsifier that binds to liquids and results in a thick material of good consistency. It is heavily used in cosmetic products. Aloe gel is an antiseptic that will fight skin bacteria as well as protect the skin. With the addition of essential oils, you can scent your deodorant to your liking and help preserve your creation. Instructions

    • 1

Obtain guar-gum powder and aloe-vera gel from a health-food store or online retailer. Make sure that both products are as pure as possible, as many manufacturers add preservatives and other agents to their products, especially aloe gel.

    • 2

Mix about 6 ounces of guar gum with 4 ounces of water. The guar gum will bind to the water and become a thick, sticky goop.

    • 3

Add about 6 ounces of aloe gel to the mix and stir vigorously. Make sure that the ingredients combine to a smooth consistency that is like egg whites.

    • 4

Add your essential oil for fragrance and preservation. Good oils include eucalyptus, lemon, lavender and geranium. Mix again until all oils are well absorbed by the mixture.

    • 5

Pour your deodorant into the roll-top bottle and shake it up after you have put the cap back on. Use just as you would any roll-top deodorant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use essential oils sparingly, as too much of some oils will irritate the skin. Use about one drop of essential oil per ounce of deodorant.
