Cooking a steak in a frying pan can produce the same positive results as cooking a steak on an outdoor grill. Most cuts of beef that you can purchase can be successfully cooked right in a frying pan along with a few simple tricks of the trade.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cast iron frying pan (size will depend on size of steak)
  • Meat thermometer
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Other spices of your choice
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Next, place the cast-iron pan on one of the stovetop burners--you want to heat the pan before you add the steak. Turn the burner heat up to medium high.

  2. Step 2

Cook the steak in the pan. Once your steak is up to room temperature, season it with salt and pepper and whatever else you may desire. Your pan should now be good and hot. Add about one tablespoon of olive oil into the pan. The oil will haze and begin to smoke. Add the steak and allow it to brown on each side (approximately two minutes on each side).

  3. Step 3

Finish the steak in the oven. Once the steak is browned on both sides, open your preheated oven and place the pan on the middle rack. This will allow the internal section of the meat to come up to your desired temperature.

  4. Step 4

Check the final temperature. Temperatures range from rare (120 F); medium rare (125 F); medium (130 F); and well done (135 F and above). Pull the steak out of the oven after approximately two to four minutes, depending on the thickness and your desired temperature. Insert the thermometer about half way into the meat and when it reads five degrees below your desired temperature, remove the steak from the oven and allow it to rest for at least five minutes before serving.
