Stucco is a type of decorative finish that can be applied to indoor or outdoor walls. Applying different stucco effects can hide even the biggest flaws in damaged walls, as well as creating a unique and customized look for any room. It only takes a few basic painting tools to stucco a wall, and the process can be completed in about 10 to 12 hours, depending on the size of the room.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Move all furniture out of the room and cover the floor with plastic drop cloths. Secure the drop cloths to the baseboards using masking tape. Cover all additional light fixtures or unmovable furniture with drop cloths or masking tape.

  2. Step 2

Mix one part laundry detergent with three parts hot water in a bucket. Clean all surfaces to be painted with this solution, using a large sponge to apply. Allow the surfaces to dry thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Use spackle and a putty knife to fill in all large holes and cracks in the walls. Dip the putty knife into the spackle, apply it directly to the wall and smooth it over. Allow eight hours to dry. Recheck the patched areas and apply more spackle as necessary.

  4. Step 4

Apply the stucco paint to the walls using a paint roller. Start from the outside edges and then work inward, painting one small section at a time.

  5. Step 5

Use a stiff brush to create the stucco effect after each small area is painted. Drag the brush over the wet paint until the desired design is achieved. Repeat this step until the entire wall is completed. Allow the paint to dry for eight hours once finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different stucco designs and techniques on a piece of scrap wood before painting the walls. Try using a variety of items, including metal combs, to create different stucco effects. Almost anything can be used to create a unique stucco look for your wall.
  • Before painting, ensure the room is well ventilated. Paint can be noxious and should not be inhaled.
