Take an iPod Nano Apart
Take an iPod Nano Apart

You can take your iPod Nano apart with a couple of simple tools and care while handling it. Familiarize yourself with the components of your iPod Nano before you begin disassembly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flat-head screwdriver or putty knife
  • Phillips screwdriver (size 00)
  1. Step 1

Open the case by using a flat-head screwdriver or putty knife. Your iPod Nano should be facing up. Place the flat screwdriver between the top plastic case and metal bottom case, gently prying all the way around the iPod Nano until the bottom case comes off. The bottom metal case doesn't have any wires connected, so it can easily be removed.

  2. Step 2

Remove the battery by gently prying it with a flat screwdriver. It's only held in place by adhesive, so it should dislodge easily. It's connected to the logic board via soldered wires. Take care not to pull the wires loose.

  3. Step 3

Remove the logic board by removing the four screws. Three screws are located near the headphone jack and sync port; the fourth screw is toward the middle of the board. The screws will be covered with either tape or a sticker. Use a small-sized Phillips screwdriver. After removing the screws, carefully lift up the logic board--taking care not to disrupt the connections found on the underside of the logic board.

  4. Step 4

Remove the front case from the logic board by removing the click wheel cable. The cable is attached to the logic board via a connector. By flipping up the black piece on the opposite side of where the cable is going into the logic board, you will unlock the connector. This will allow you to pull the cable out, and you can then remove the front case from the logic board.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect the LCD by flipping the black locking mechanism and gently pulling the cable out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place some tape around the metal back case in order to protect your iPod Nano against scratches while removing the case.
  • Take care not to pull any soldered wires from the logic board. If removed, they must be re-soldered.
