How to Clean Tanning Bed Bulbs

Tanning bed bulbs will work effectively for several years if they are maintained correctly. Often, people think that their bulbs need to be replaced, when in reality they just need to give the inside of the tanning bed a good cleaning. Tanning beds have a tendency to accumulate dust, which can affect the way that the UV rays pass through the bulbs, so it is important to clean your tanning bed bulbs at least once a month. Instructions

Take the tanning acrylics off your tanning bed. The acrylics are the thick, clear sheets of plastic that you lie on when you tan. The tops of the acrylics are usually cleaned after every tanning session. You may have to unscrew these sheets at the corners of the bed, or they may pop or slide out.

Remove the tanning lamps. Tanning lamps are long, thin bulbs that look like fluorescent bulbs. They need to be handled with care, but they can be removed and then put back with little difficulty. Lay them flat on top of the clean sheet as you remove them. Never prop any bulbs upright.

Wipe down the bulbs with a clean, damp cloth. Make sure that you have wrung the cloth out thoroughly so that it is barely damp. Hold the bulb on a slant so that you can wrap the cloth around the bulb and pull it the length of the bulb to remove all the dust. Once you have cleaned a bulb, move it to the other clean sheet so that you are not laying it back down in the dirt. If your cloth gets too dusty, rinse and wring it out before wiping down more bulbs.

Replace the bulbs in the bed. You can screw the bulbs in gently just as you would with any other light bulb. If you have not done this before, get another person to help you to avoid accidentally banging the bulbs on the edge of the bed and breaking them.

Put the acrylics back into place. You may be able to snap them in or have to screw them back into place. Be sure that you cleaned the underside of the acrylics before you put them back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tanning beds collect a lot of dust, so it is wise to clean every part, including the fans and the ballast tray underneath the bed, each time you clean the bulbs.

  • Many dermatologists believe that tanning can be very bad for your skin. It also causes skin cancer.
