How to Clean Rock Crystal Jewelry

Rock crystal jewelry is a term generally used to refer to quartz crystal jewelry. Quartz comes in many beautiful colors, shapes and sizes. It may be called simply rock crystal or referred to as cabochon. It may be clear like a diamond, amber, gold, brown, "dusty" or even purple. Rock crystal jewelry is fairly hardy, but you still need to be careful when you clean it to make sure you do not damage the settings or the stones. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the jewelry in a bowl of warm, soapy water. It is best to use just gentle soap and water on rock crystal because there are so many varieties and often the additional minerals that make a stone uniquely beautiful can also cause it to react in surprising ways. For example, while quartz is a hardy gemstone, rose quartz will actually fracture and even "pop" under high heat.

    • 2

Use the toothbrush to clean the jewelry. A baby toothbrush will not scratch the stones or the setting. You can use it to gently work around the prongs of the setting and remove dirt and grime. Do not scrub, but use gentle, circular motions.

    • 3

Rinse off the rock crystal jewelry with warm, clear water. Rinse the jewelry off so that there are no soap bubbles left behind. Continue to hold the jewelry over the bowl as you rinse so that if you drop it you do not lose it down the drain.

    • 4

Dry the rock crystal jewelry with the clean, soft cloth. Rock crystals often have large faces, so be sure that you get all the water off or they can spot just like car windows that are not wiped dry. Once the jewelry is dry, you can wear it or replace it in storage until you are ready to show off your shine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never clean any jewelry with a cleaner or a soap that contains bleach. It will discolor many stones.
