How to Make a Saddle Rack

A saddle rack can instantly clean up a tack room or horse trailer by keeping saddles off the ground and in shape. Saddle stands and racks can be very expensive, especially when paying for a good quality rack. Making your own saddle rack also allows you to customize the rack to any size or color you like.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • 2 x 12 lumber
  • Saw
  • Goggles
  1. Step 1

Measure the length of your saddle to ensure the rack is long enough to hold the saddle and then cut two boards to this length. Allow a few extra inches.

  2. Step 2

Cut two boards to the height that you want the saddle rack to be. Cut two more boards to this height, but angle the tops of each board to look like an arrow or point. Angling the board two or three inches is a good amount of angle for this.

  3. Step 3

Stand the boards with the points facing up. Nail the other boards (the ones you cut to the length of the saddle) on top of these, about one or two inches from each end. Now you have the two pointed boards stand up and the other two boards are making a roof-like top on them.

  4. Step 4

Measure the width between the two standing boards and nail another board between them at the bottom to help brace the rack.

  5. Step 5

Cut two smaller boards to nail to the bottom of the rack to make "feet" for the stand. This will keep the saddle rack standing up.

  6. Step 6

Sit both your saddle pad and saddle on this rack. The rack is portable and can be used anywhere.

Tips & Warnings
  • Paint your finished saddle stand to match your tack room, trailer, or tack and equipment.
