How to Become a Knight in Medieval Times

When you read tales about knights in shining armor, you assume that they grew into their positions easily. In actuality, the life of a knight-to-be was not easy. They had to pass through the stages of page and squire before being knighted, which meant learning difficult skills and serving their masters devotedly. You would have to overcome many challenges before finally becoming a knight.

Instructions

    • 1

Become a page at the age of seven in the palace of another knight. As a page, you run errands for your lord, serve him at mealtimes and help him get dressed. You also learn to read, write, sing, dance, use basic weapons and ride a horse.

    • 2

Become a squire at around age 13. At this point, you become apprenticed to a knight. You serve the knight, polish his weapons and armor, and defend him in war. In addition, you learn advanced weaponry skills and study the responsibilities of a knight.

    • 3

When your master deems you ready, he prepares for your knighting ceremony. You spend the night before the knighting ceremony fasting and praying for guidance.

    • 4

Take the oath of knighthood in a public ceremony. A superior knight then dubs you by touching you with the flat edge of his sword. You will then officially be a knight.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can become a knight earlier than expected by showing bravery on the battlefield.

  • Make sure to paint identifying designs on your armor. Otherwise, your comrades will not be able to distinguish you from the enemy.
