Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you have the right size ski boots and skis. Boots should fit snugly while allowing some wiggle room in the toe. The appropriate cross country ski for you is dictated by your weight and skiing level. Ask a salesperson for help to help find a good fit.

    • 2

Find an area on flat ground to put on your skis.

    • 3

With ski boots on, insert the front of the boot into the ski's bindings and step down. Repeat this with the other foot.

    • 4

Take your ski poles and place each one into the ground on both sides.

    • 5

Glide your skis back and forth while holding on to the poles to get adjusted to your gear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wax-less skis are the most commonly used type of cross country skis for beginners. With a grip on the base of each ski, they are considered the easiest to use because you simply put them on and go. Standard cross country ski poles should reach comfortably just under your armpits while you are standing.

  • Avoid mishaps when putting on your skis by regularly checking the bindings (or having them checked out by a pro). The boots should fit easily into the bindings and there should not be any cracks or bent parts. If you notice any damage to your cross country ski bindings, take them to be repaired or exchange for another pair of skis, if renting.
