If you are in the middle of a recipe and suddenly realize that you are out of granulated sugar when the recipe specifies this, there is no need to abandon the recipe or dash out to the store before you finish. Generally, you can simply substitute brown sugar for granulated sugar. Learn how to substitute brown sugar for granulated sugar in recipes so that you do not have to make a special trip to the store.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brown sugar
  • One cup measuring cup
  • Large metal spoon
  1. Step 1

    Begin filling your measuring cup with brown sugar according to the amount of granulated sugar called for in the recipe.

  2. Step 2

    Use the large metal spoon to pack the brown sugar down tightly into the measuring cup.

  3. Step 3

    Substitute brown sugar equally for granulated sugar in a recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Generally, brown sugar can simply be substituted for granulated sugar equally in recipes. There is no special ratio to be figured. Be aware that your finished result may have more of a molasses taste than if you used granulated sugar, however.
