How to Change a Fishing Line

Fishing line is used on a fishing reel to cast and retrieve a variety of lures for fishing. There are many different manufacturers of line as well as types including fly line, braided and fluorocarbon. However, the most commonly used line is monofilament which is suitable for use on spincast, spinning and baitcast reels. Modern fishing line is strong and durable, although it does wear out due to light and abrasion. It is necessary to replace fishing line periodically to ensure that the big one does not get away.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing reel
  • New fishing line
  1. Step 1

Begin by releasing the line from the reel. This may involve opening the bail on a spinning reel, depressing the casting button on a baitcaster, or releasing the line by button or trigger on a spin cast reel.

  2. Step 2

Pull the line from the reel. Wind the line on an old drink bottle or stick to avoid a pile of loose line on the ground.

  3. Step 3

Tie the end of the new line to the spool using an arbor knot. Loop the line around the spool twice and, with the tag or loose end, tie an over-hand knot around the main line. Tie another over-hand knot with only the tag end. Snug the knot tightly around the spool.

  4. Step 4

Turn the handle of the reel to engage the spool or close the bail of a spinning reel. There may be some slight resistance as the handle is initially turned as this is re-engaging the spooling mechanism.

  5. Step 5

Wind the line onto the spool by turning the handle. Most reels will feature automatic spooling which involves a mechanism which evenly distributes the line across the face of the spool.

  6. Step 6

When the spool is filled to specification in regard to the size of line being used, or when the spool is 3/4 full, cut the line from the refilling spool. Secure the line with tape or anchor by slipping the line around the line keeper on the side of the spool.

Tips & Warnings
  • For spincast reels, it will be necessary to remove the front reel cover to access the spool. This must be done so that the line may be tied to the spool. Make sure to thread the line through the spool housing before tying.
  • Use caution when handling line as it is capable of cutting, especially when stretched tight.
