How to Use a Buffing Wheel

Shining, polishing and removing rust are just three of the many great things for which a buffing wheel can be used. Unlike a di-grinder, which also removes rust but scrapes the steel it rotates against, a buffing wheel uses hundreds of fine-wire bristles to polish and buff metal products. Using a buffing wheel is easy as long as you practice safety. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Using a Buffing Wheel

Put on your gloves and safety glasses.

    • 2

Read the buffing wheel operator's and safety manual completely.

    • 3

Turn on the buffing wheel. The wheel should have a protective shield over most of its back half side. The wheel will be rotating clockwise, so you will want to buff things on the bottom half of the exposed front side of the buffing wheel.

    • 4

Position the piece of metal you are going to buff in this lower region on the front of the wheel, and firmly hold onto it with both hands. Slowly ease the piece of metal toward the buffing wheel. Rotate the piece to buff all the necessary sides.
