How to Make Fishing Lures With Household Items

Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in the world today. Not only is it a great hobby, but it can also put dinner on the table as well. Unfortunately, it can sometimes get quite expensive after buying rods, reels, line and so on. One way to forgo some of that cost however, is by making your own lures at home. Learn exactly what you need to make a lure from household items that will catch bluefish, redfish and Spanish mackerel as well as trout and a variety of other fish.

Things You'll Need

• Straws
• Small treble hooks
• Wire leader 15# test
• Swivels 15# test
• Scissors
• Split shot weights

Instructions

1. Cut the straws into 2.5-inch lengths.

2. Cut a length of the wire leader around 1 foot in length. You don't have to be exact, just around a foot will do.

3. 

   Twist the wire onto the eye of the hook using a haywire twist.

4. Run the wire through one of the short straw lengths and when the hook is touching the end of the straw, crimp a weight onto the wire on the opposite side of the straw.

5. 

   Attach the swivel to the opposite end of the wire, again using a haywire twist.

Tips & Warnings

• Pliers can come in handy when twisting stubborn wire. Straws can be gotten for free at fast food restaurants.

• Treble hooks can be very sharp so exercise caution when handling.
