Things You'll Need:
- Baitcast rod
- Baitcast reel
- Fishing line
- Hooks
- Plastic baits
-
Step 1
Depress the button on the back of the reel to release the spool of the reel, which will allow line to unwind. Hold the plastic bait and pull a few feet of line from the reel.
-
Step 2
Attach a plastic bait such as a Trick Worm, Brush Hog or other "creature"-type bait to the hook. The key is to use a bait that will generate a large amount of motion from line and water movement.
-
Step 3
For flipping, position the rod over the patch of weeds of cover in which a bass is suspected to be waiting. With the thumb on the spool, release the line and allow the bait to gently enter the water and the bait to work down to the bass.
-
Step 4
Continue to release line from the reel for pitching, as there should be 6 feet or so of line initially available. With a thumb on the spool to prevent over run, grasp the bait with the other hand. Pull the rod back and to the side. Swing the rod forward and release toward the plastic bait toward the target. Keeping the rod tip upward will cause the line and bait to act as a pendulum and swing outward. Release line to allow the bait to reach the target.
-
Step 5
Allow the bait to sit initially, avoid the temptation to begin reel. Turn the reel handle only enough to re-engage the spool mechanism and prevent further line from unwinding.
-
Step 6
Lift the tip of the rod to generate movement of the bait and slowly turn the reel a few times. Stop again to allow the bait to settle and then repeat the process.
