1
Use the saw to cut a length of cane pole at least 8 feet long. Pre-cut cane can also be purchased at home stores and garden centers.
-
2
Trim the large end of the cane pole with a knife to remove any jagged edges or burrs, which may be uncomfortable during fishing.

3
Cut the pole to length with the saw or knife. The pole should be a minimum of 8 feet long and may be up to 12 feet or more. Make sure to remove all sharp or irregular edges.
-
4
Cut a small notch about 2 inches from the smaller end of the pole. Tie one end of the fishing line to the small end of the cane pole. Use a double over hand knot for this. The line should be at least twice the length of the pole.

5
Attach a weight and hook to the line. Most weights may be crimped onto the line with pliers. The hook should be attached with a clinch knot. To tie the clinch knot, pass the tag end of the line through the eye of the hook. About 2 inches should remain on the tag end of the line. Twist the line 6 to 7 turns around itself and pass the tag through the small opening created just above the eye of the hook. Moisten the line and pull tight.

Tips & Warnings
The drier the cane is the better in regard to the rigidity of the pole. Use a heavier test line for the pole and then tie on a leader of a smaller diameter. This will help in controlling the line.
Use caution when working with saws and knives. Keep fingers and hands out of the way to avoid injury. Wear eye protection when necessary.
