Step 1
If you have a hardwood table and it has all kinds of wear and tear on it.Instead of getting a new table, just learn how to refinish the table you have. You can make your table look new and you can make the table look the way you want.Usually the top of the table gets the most wear and tear. The refinishing tools you will need for this project is a belt sander, paint brushes, stain applicators, rubber gloves or work gloves, hand electric sander, belt sander, rough grit belt sand paper, medium grit sandpaper, fine grit sand paper that fits the electric handsander, stain, polyurethane or you can put primer or paint your table.Try to work on the table outside or somewhere else, not in your house, because there will be a lot of dust.
-
Step 2
To begin you use your belt sander to take off the old finish and to get out all of the niks, dents, scratches and other stuff you do not want on the table and make the table top even and all the marks off. After you finished belt sanding, get the electric hand sander with medium grit sand paper attached and sand the whole top to make the top even smoother, then when done with the medium grit sand paper, put on the fine grit sand paper and finish sand the table top.
-
Step 3
If you want the table top to look the same as the rest of the table. You need to find the same color finish. If it is a clear color finish. You would need to apply polyurethane only.if the table top is a stain color.Go to your nearest hardware store and get the right color. But if you want to paint the table top,you would need to lightly hand sand the rest of the table so the primer and paint will stick better. The primer is the first coat that goes on the table.
-
Step 4
If you are going to apply stain, shake the stain can first to mix the stain or when the lid is off mix it with a paint stirrer. Before staining, get all of the dust of the table top.Put your gloves on,so the stain gets on the gloves and not your hands and arms.Get your paint brush and apply some stain to the table top. When you apply the stain, apply it the same way as the wood grain goes and apply the stain like your painting, when you apply the stain,go along the top and make even stain lines before the stain dries. So it is nice and even.
-
Step 5
After applying the stain, let it dry for 1 day and the next day you take the fine sand paper and fine sand the table top.Re wipe the top of the table to get the little bit of dust off then apply 1 coat of the polyurethane.Apply this the same way as the stain.Let this coat dry for a day.The next day you get your fine grit sandpaper and sand the table top to get the grit and rough spots off.after you sanded wipe of the top again and apply another coat of polyurethhane. When done you should have a nice shiny even table top.
