To relieve the stress and anxiety of everyday life, many people have turned to the practice of aromatherapy through scented oil candles and incense. By burning scented oil sticks with fragrances like sandalwood, lavender, jasmine or cedarwood, you can make your home or work space an inviting place to be. There are many fragrances to choose from, and you can actually create your own scented oil sticks to match your own lifestyle and tastes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Incense solvent liquid (DPG)
  • Fragrance oil of your choice
  • Glass baking pan
  • Unscented "punk" sticks
  • Screen
  • Plastic container
  • Small plastic bags

How to Make Scented Oil Sticks

  1. Step 1

Combine 8 oz. of fragrance oil with 16 oz. of incense solvent liquid (DPG) in a glass baking pan. Stir ingredients together so the mixture is consistent throughout.

  2. Step 2

Place unscented "punk" sticks in the glass baking pan with the solution and allow to soak for 24 hours. A 24 oz. solution of fragrance oil and solvent liquid can make about 250 scented oil sticks.

  3. Step 3

Lay the sticks out on a screen to air dry for at least 48 hours so that they are completely dried. Never try to dry the sticks in an oven or microwave.

  4. Step 4

Drain the leftover mixture into a plastic container to store for later. The leftover fragrance and solvent mixture does not go bad and can be used again for your next batch by adding more fragrance oil.

  5. Step 5

Package the scented oil sticks in small plastic bags for use or if you prefer, you can sell them online or at flea markets.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can get the supplies listed in the "Things You'll Need" section from your local hobby and crafts shop or from the websites listed below in the Resources section as well as from other online suppliers. Scented oil sticks emit a light amount of smoke. Burn the sticks in a room that will allow the smoke to dissipate. Scented oil sticks can be lit with a regular lighter or any household match.
  • Never attempt to shorten or speed up the drying process. The sticks must be completely dry to work properly. Do not attempt to use alcohol in place of the DPG solvent. Always use an incense holder to burn your scented oil sticks. This will hold the sticks in place for proper burning and also catch the ashes that burn off from the sticks.
