How to Build Shelves on a Wall
One way to instantly to create more storage space make it is to install some shelves. You can install a few shelves in just a small amount of time, with very little effort. Add a few decorative baskets, and you've got storage in plain sight that doesn't look like storage. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Electronic stud finder
- Drill
- 2 inch drywall screws or toggle bolts
- Screwdriver
- Horizontal hang track
- Vertical standards
- Shelf support brackets
- Shelves

Determine location where shelves will be hung. Locate studs by using the electronic stud finder, following manufacturer's instructions. Locate and mark at least four studs in the area you plan to hang the shelves. If you don't plan to put books or other heavy items on your shelves, you can attach them directly to the drywall with toggle bolts and it is not necessary to locate studs.

Install horizontal hang track about 18 inches above point where top shelf will be. Drill starter holes in the studs and attach horizontal track with 2 inch drywall screws. If you're using toggle bolts to attach the hang track directly to the drywall, drill holes large enough for the toggle bolt jackets, insert jackets into drywall, then attach a hang track with toggle bolts, following manufacturer's directions.

Attach vertical standards to the hang track. Install no more than 24 inches apart, with a minimum of two vertical standards per shelf. Snap the top of vertical standards into the groove on the hang track.

Attach shelf brackets. Place a shelf support bracket in the receptor holes of vertical standards.

Place shelves on brackets.

Tips & Warnings
Support brackets are available in several widths. Purchase brackets that are the same width as the shelves you plan to install.
If you plan to put books or other heavy objects on your shelves, make sure to attach the hang bar directly to the wood studs. Attaching them to the drywall will not be secure enough to hold the weight of shelves of books or other heavy objects.
