Make Fat Hemp Necklaces

Macrame projects vary depending on what you are looking for. Everything from home furnishings to jewelery can be made with hemp, a natural jute cord. Make a pretty necklace just by tying a few knots with hemp. You will love the wide choker kind.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 25 yards jute cord
  • 1 pendant bead
  • Macrame board
  • T pins
  • Scissors

    Directions

  1. Step 1

Cut the cord into 12 strings of 2 yards each. This may be more than you need as the size of the knots and the size of the desired choker will contribute to the size. It is better to have too much than not enough.

  2. Step 2

Gather all 12 cords in one hand and place an overhand knot approximately 4 inches from the end of the gathered cords.

  3. Step 3

Divide the cords into two groups of six cords each. Tie a square knot in each group, using two knotting cords and four filler cords.

  4. Step 4

Divide each six-cord group into two groups of three cords. Tie a square knot in each group, using two knotting cords and one filler cord. You will have four square knots next to each other.

  5. Step 5

With two groups on the left side, tie a square knot using the four center cords. This makes an alternating square knot. Repeat with the two groups on the right side. You will end up then with two square knots underneath the four square knots.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 alternatively until you reach approximately 9 inches in length.
Note: The 9 inches will be the middle if you are making a choker of 18 inches. Adjust the length for larger sizes. Example: For a 20-inch choker, repeat these steps until you get 10 inches.

  7. Step 7

Gather all 12 cords and thread through the hole in the pendant bead.

  8. Step 8

Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 until the approximate size is reached, ending with Step 5.

  9. Step 9

Gather all the cords together and tie another overhand knot tightly up against the square knots. Cut the cords approximately the same length as the other side of the necklace. These are your tying cords in the back of your neck when you are ready to wear it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add small beads throughout the necklace. Use colored nylon cord.
