Deer antlers can be used for a wide variety of things such as decoration, knife handles and rattlers to call in more deer. The only thing that stands in your way is removing them from the deer's head, but this can be accomplished quickly and easily, whether at home or in the woods.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deer skull
  • Hack saw or bone saw
  • Borax
  • Pot
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Select the deer skull from which you wish to harvest the antlers. This is most often done while hunting, so pick your shots carefully.

  2. Step 2

Fill the pot with water and 1/2 cup of borax for every gallon of water added.

  3. Step 3

Boil the skull to remove any traces of flesh and hair that might be on the skull.

  4. Step 4

Remove the skull and let it cool to room temperature.

  5. Step 5

Cut underneath the antlers where the skin once was (there will be a divot in the antlers in this place).

  6. Step 6

    Repeat for other side.

Tips & Warnings
  • If using for rattling horns, a hole can be drilled on the base of each antler to which a piece of leather or rope can be tied to keep them together for easy transport and so that you do not lose one.
  • Since you are using a saw for this project, exercise caution as saws are very sharp. Always wash your hands when handling meat products.
