How to Make a Children's Book Cover
For the purpose of protecting a book and keeping your child occupied, make a children's book cover. When making a children's book cover, have your child help out by picking out pictures from an old children's magazine and using them to decorate the book cover.
Things You'll Need
- Ball of Yarn
- Sewing Needle (the eye of the needle should be large enough for the yarn to fit through)
- Large Piece of Thick Paper (paper from a grocery bag will do)
- Children's Magazine
- Scissors
- A ruler
Instructions
-
-
1
Lay the piece of paper out on the table and place your book on it.
-
2
Draw two straight lines on the paper, one along the top edge of the book and the other along the bottom edge of the book.
-
-
3
Set book aside.
-
4
Using your ruler, measure 1/4-inch above the top line and draw a line 1/4-inch above that line, parallel to it.
-
5
Measure 1/4-inch below the bottom line drawn, and draw a line parallel to the bottom line, 1/4-inch below it.
-
6
Cut the paper with scissors, along the top line and bottom line.
-
7
Place book on paper and fold 3 inches towards the inside of the book, over the back of the book's cover and 3 inches of paper toward the inside of the book, over the front of the book's cover. Leave book in the book cover when going through the next step.
-
8
Thread the sewing needle with the yarn, knot the end of the yarn and sew along the top and bottom edges of the paper, binding the flaps of the book cover so the book cover fits the book perfectly.
-
9
Cut pictures out of the children's magazine and let your child decorate the book cover with them by pasting them to the paper.
-
10
Open the book with the cover on it and find the center of the book cover on the top edge. Sew a piece of yarn that's about 2 inches longer than the length of the book to this spot on the book cover and secure a charm to the end of the yarn. Flip the length of yarn (your new bookmark) between the pages of the book to save your place in the book.
