How to Make Coffee Filters

It is 5 a.m. and you are standing over a coffee maker, ready to scoop your favorite ground coffee into the filter basket when you realize that you have run out of coffee filters. There is hope. Instead of going out to the store before you have had coffee, you can use a substitute in your own home. Here is what you can use instead of coffee filters to make your morning cup of Joe. Things You'll Need

  • Coffee maker with filter basket
  • Coffee
  • Paper towels
  • Napkins
  • Clean cotton cloth or thin dishtowel
  • Scissors

Instructions

      Take three paper towels and place them on top of each other.

      Cut the paper towel layers into a circle that is 6 inches in diameter for smaller 4- to 6-cup coffee makers and 7 inches in diameter for 8- to 12-cup coffee makers.

      Place all three layers of paper towels into the filter basket of the coffee maker.

      Add coffee on top, close the basket and brew as usual.

      Substitute napkins, cloth or a clean, non-fluffy dishtowel for the paper towels and follow steps one through four if you lack paper towels.
