Quilting has been a popular pastime for many years. Making a king sized quilt is not difficult as long as you have all of the right supplies and take your time. Quilting is a time consuming task, but it is worthwhile because the quilt will last for many years and may even become a family heirloom.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Pieces of 107 by 108 fabric (any design)
  • Batting 107 by 108
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Chalk
  1. Step 1

Buy fabric in bulk lengths. King size quilts require fabric lengths of 107 by 108 inches. The beauty of a quilt is enhanced when there are fewer cuts in the fabric, so look for fabric that is wide and long to reduce the amount of sewing necessary. Any type of fabric design may be purchased, but some quilters prefer to buy a solid and a print that match to make the quilt reversible.

  2. Step 2

Ensure proper yardage. Most fabric stores will measure fabric for you. However, if you need to measure fabric on your own, get a large, clean table and a yard stick. Lay the fabric out by the length of the yard stick to measure one yard. Then, take the fabric from the top of the yard stick and pull it down to measure a new length of the same fabric. This is the best way to measure the fabric yardage you have.

  3. Step 3

Add 2 inches for a California King quilt. A California King quilt is slightly larger than a traditional king size quilt and requires an extra two inches of fabric and batting for the length and width. Don't forget to add this in when measuring the yardage or the quilt might not be the right size.

  4. Step 4

Decide on quilting by hand or machine up front. If you choose to hand quilt, the previously stated dimensions will work fine. However, if you choose to machine quilt, the fabric will need to be an additional 4 inches on each side and an additional 6 inches on the bottom. Quilting machines with a very fine quilting pattern will require 6 inches on both sides as well as the bottom.

  5. Step 5

Purchase matching thread and batting. The batting will be placed between the two pieces of fabric and should be 107 by 108 inches, too, for a perfect fit. The thread should be purchased to match the fabric. Choose a thread that most closely matches the background print or the dominant color of the fabric.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use bits and pieces of old fabric, baby clothes, or favorite sheets in your quilt.
  • Buy more fabric than you need in case you make a mistake.
