Making a child's hula skirt will take two hours to complete. Small children can assist with the hula skirt project. Older children should be able to work independently, under adult supervision. A hula skirt can be used as Halloween costume, school play costume, as a scout project, or for imaginative play. Supplies for the hula skirt are inexpensive, and readily available in the household, or at craft supply stores.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old newspapers or green crepe paper
  • Elastic
  • Thick fabric (optional)
  • Green spray paint if using newspapers
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Hot glue gun
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  1. Step 1

Gather old newspapers, or purchase a role of green crepe paper. Use three layers of paper for each skirt. Overlap paper for skirt thickness.

  2. Step 2

Cut the newspapers into strips. Begin at the top of the newspaper, measure down 3 inches and mark with permanent marker. Do not cut above this line when slicing strips with scissors or a wrapping paper cutter.

  3. Step 3

Spray the newspaper with green paint on both sides. Allow paint to dry for one hour before proceeding to the next step.

  4. Step 4

Measure a piece of elastic or canvas belt to fit a child's waist.

  5. Step 5

Cut an additional piece of elastic or thick fabric to waist size.

  6. Step 6

Staple dried newspaper or green crepe paper layers onto the selected waist covering material.

  7. Step 7

Attach fabric or an additional piece of elastic to the waist and cover with hot glue to protect your child from staples.
