Instructions

  1. Making a Hanging Lamp

    • 1

Snip the end off your extension cord. Strip the wire of its covering for the bottom 2 inches of the cord. You should have two separate wires.

    • 2

Remove the cap and covering from your light socket and thread the wire through the hole in the cap. Then twist the two wires around the screws on either side of the light fixture.

    • 3

Replace the cap and covering on the light fixture. Install a light bulb into the fixture.

    • 4

Secure your lamp shade to the upper part of the light fixture onto the covering that conceals the wires you just installed. If your lampshade is attached to a chain, weave the extension cord through the chain so that the lamp shade hangs just above the light bulb.

    • 5

Install two hooks into the ceiling between the area where you want the lamp to hang and a wall that has an electrical socket on it. Hang the cord over these two hooks so that the lamp hangs at your preferred height. Plug the cord into the nearest outlet and turn on your lamp.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try out a variety of lampshades to create the right look for your room. Experiment with paper lanterns, Tiffany-style lamp shades and more traditional cloth-covered shades to find the right style.
