Remove Food Color Stains from Clothing, Carpet or Upholstery

  1. Step 1

Remove food color from clothing with sponge and water. Begin by gently blotting the stain with a sponge that has been dipped in cold water. Then use a commercial pre-wash stain remover. Finally, launder the clothing.

  2. Step 2

Eliminate food color from upholstery. Dip a clean cloth in a solution of 2 1/2 cups cold water, 1 tbsp. dishwashing detergent and 1 tbsp. white vinegar. Leave the solution on for 25 minutes, blotting occasionally with added solution.

  3. Step 3

Sponge away food color from carpeting. Dip a clean cloth in a solution of 2 to 2 1/2 cups warm water, 1 tbsp. dishwashing detergent and 1 tbsp. white vinegar. Blot the stain with this solution until it disappears.

  4. Step 4

Try rubbing alcohol if stains persist. Rubbing alcohol can be blotted on both upholstery and carpeting if the food color stains continue. Follow the rubbing alcohol by sponging gently with water.

  5. Step 5

Try shaving cream on clothing stains. According to CreativeHomeMaking.com, peroxide and other chemicals found in shaving cream can assist in the removal of food color stains from clothing. Simply apply a small amount of shaving cream and water to the stained area and rub gently. Apply the same mixture a second time and allow it to stay for short time. Wash the clothing after it has been blotted with only warm water.

  6. Step 6

Consider a commercial product. Commercial stain removers can also be used to release food color stains from clothing, carpet and upholstery. A variety of stain removers exist ranging from small pen-like applicators to remove clothing stains or large steam vacuums designed to remove stains from carpeting. Prior to considering a commercial product, research user reviews at websites like Amazon.com or Epinions.com.
