How to Draw an Oval With Photoshop Software

A very basic oval shape can be created in most all versions of Photoshop by just creating a new file and then making the oval shape with your mouse. Once the oval is created, you can add color (and shadow) to create an oval background or image that can be incorporated into your website or used in the print media as part of your graphic design.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Photoshop program and go to the main screen.

    • 2

Open a new file and select a size for the file. To do this, click on the "File" setting at the very top-left of your screen. Then go to the top of the drop-down menu and click on "New." A box will appear where you can choose the size and resolution of your image. At this time, also select the "RGB" mode, and below Contents, choose white.

    • 3

Click on "OK" and now you have an image background where you can create an oval with your mouse. After the elliptical shape is created, you will then select a color for your oval.

    • 4

Go to the toolbar at the left of your screen and select the marquee tool, which is the very top box in the left-hand column.

    • 5

Click on this box and you will be presented with two choices, Elliptical Marquee tool and Rectangular Marquee tool. Choose the Elliptical Marquee tool. Leave the rest of the settings as is, especially the style box, which should be set at "Normal."

    • 6

Place your mouse in the area of your image. Click on the mouse and hold the click button down. Then move the mouse around until you have the oval shape that you want. Then release the click and you are ready to fill or add a gradient color to the oval shape.

    • 7

Choose a foreground color and use the fill box on the Photoshop toolbar, or choose both a foreground and a background color. Then select the gradient box in the toolbar. Either task can produce fascinating color combinations.

    • 8

Finish the oval by clicking on the "Select" heading at the top of the Photoshop page. Then choose "Deselect." Now your oval is ready to be saved.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many things can be done to the oval after you have created the file with the oval shape. To list just a few items, you can add text, add special effects or texture.

  • Make sure your Photoshop software is not a copy of another program.
