Gmail--the email platform from Internet giant Google--is a robust and capable free email system. Because it offers a considerable amount of storage, some users choose to store files in a Gmail account rather than on a local hard drive. This article will explain how to upload video files to a Gmail account for later access and use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gmail account
  • Video file
  1. Step 1

Log in to Gmail by opening a web browser (any browser will work, though Google is optimized to work with popular browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) and typing "www.gmail.com" into the address bar. When the Gmail site loads, enter your login credentials in the fields labeled "Username" and "Password," then click "Sign In."

  2. Step 2

Create a new message. Click "Compose Mail" in the upper left corner of the website, just above the "Inbox" link and just below the "Gmail" logo.

  3. Step 3

Enter your own email address in the "To:" text box, because you will be sending the video file to yourself as an email. Click in the field labeled "Subject:" and enter a description that will help you locate the file later.

  4. Step 4

Enter a message to yourself, if needed. Click in the large text area located below the subject line to place the cursor in the message area. In this field, you can enter some descriptive information about your video file.

  5. Step 5

Locate and click on the "Attach File" link under the "Subject" line. A dialogue box will appear that you can use to browse to the video file on your computer or local network. Select your video file, then click "Select" (depending on your operating system, the "Select" option may simply read, "OK").

  6. Step 6

With the file attached and all message fields complete, click "Send" to send the email to yourself. Depending on the size of your file, the sending process may either be nearly instant or take several minutes. The email will appear as a new message in your inbox, and you can label or file it as necessary to retrieve it later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Gmail supports file sizes of up to 20 megabytes; if your file is larger, you may not be able to store it in your Gmail account. The Gmail "label" option allows you to apply labels in order to group emails together for easier retrieval.
  • Forwarding copyrighted videos may violate intellectual property regulations; be sure to forward only videos that are freely available in the public domain or to which you hold the copyright.
