Raising a car with a floor jack is necessary to perform various repairs underneath the vehicle as well as to gain easier access to underbody points. Care should be taken when lifting a vehicle with a floor jack. Only a floor jack that is capable of safely lifting and supporting the weight of the vehicle should be used. In addition, it is of vital importance to only lift a vehicle in an area that itself is capable of supporting the vehicle's weight. For example, attempting to lift a vehicle under the bumper will most likely result in a broken bumper.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wheel chocks
  • Vehicle's owner's manual
  1. Step 1

Lift the rear of the vehicle at the rear differential housing. Wheel chocks should be placed behind both front tires before performing the lift, as the vehicle will have a tendency to move toward the lift point. Slide the jack under the differential until the jack's lift sits directly below the differential. Activate the jack to raise the jack's lift. Lifting the differential will in turn lift the rear of the vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Lift the front of the vehicle at the lower control arm. Wheel chocks should be placed in front of both rear tires before performing the lift, as the vehicle will have a tendency to move toward the lift point. A lower control arm is located behind each front tire. It can quickly be identified by locating the large coil spring that sits on top of the lower control arm. Position the jack's mounting point directly under the lower control arm. Then activate the jack to raise the vehicle.

  3. Step 3

Lift the side of the vehicle at the frame rail or at the specified lift contact point. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual to determine whether a lift point is specified to raise the side of the vehicle. If a lift point is specified, lift the vehicle at this point. If no lift point is specified, raise the side of the vehicle by positioning the jack underneath the frame rail. The frame rail runs along the length of the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never go under a vehicle supported only by a jack. The vehicle should always first be placed on jack stands capable of handling the weight of the vehicle.
