Pom pom decorations are fun to create, and add fun to any kid's craft or arts project. Making pom poms by hand is easy and even a novice crafts person can make them. All of the supplies you need are available at a crafts or arts supply store. Pom poms can be made any size, from tiny pom poms to huge pom poms, and out of any type of yarn. Fluffy yarns will yield fluffy pom poms, while thinner yarns will produce an eyelash, feathery type of pom pom. Here's a step-by-step guide to make a simple, medium-gauge yarn pom pom.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Cardboard cutouts

Cut out two circles from cardboard, about 4 inches in diameter. Trim the edges if the circles are not similar in size. Cut a hole about 1 1/2 inches in diameter in the center of both circles. Trim around the hole to make the two holes similar in size.

  2. Step 2
    Wrap the yarn
    Wrap the yarn

Place the two cardboard circles together and wrap yarn through the hole, connecting the circles. Wrap the yarn around the circles, making the outside edge of the cardboard thick with yarn. When the hole can no longer fit any more yarn through it, you are ready to cut the yarn off the cardboard.

  3. Step 3
    Pull off the cardboard

Hold the cardboard with the wrapped yarn firmly in your hand, and cut around the outside edge of the circle, between the two cardboard circles. Cut all the way around the cardboard.

  4. Step 4

Wrap a piece of yarn in between the pieces of cardboard, around the center yarn strands, tying it tightly. Gently pull the cardboard off of the yarn and trim the yarn ends to make them even. The pom pom is now ready to be added to your collection.
