Remove the screws from the doorknob. Locate the screws that are on the door handle. You may have either a lever handle or a plain door knob. Either way, the screws will be located near the perimeter of the base of the knob.

Remove the rest of the hardware, if there is any. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the flat metal piece on the side of your doorknob. If you have a handle set, remove the screws that are on the large plate.

Pull the knob, lever or handle away from the door to remove it from the door. Be gentle and do not yank them away or you risk damaging the wood of your door. This will expose the lock mechanism.

Remove the old latch by using a Phillip screwdriver to remove the screws from the door locks. When the screws are removed, the door lock will slide out easily. Now, you are ready to repair or replace your door lock.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the replacement locks are not the same size as your previous door locks, you may have to paint the area if it is not completely covered.

  • Use caution with screwdrivers so they do not slip and injure you.
