Instructions

    • 1

Select a headband to wear. The best ones for afro styles are made from softer, silkier fabrics with no exposed elastic. Headbands with tails are particular great for afro syles as they do a better job of holding back thick hair.

    • 2

Slip on the headband or place the headband over your forehead. Pull the headband taut and push it over your hairline until it is as far back on your head as you like it.

    • 3

If the headband has tails, tie the two ends together at the nape of your neck with a double knot. This will secure it in place.

    • 4

If the headband is circular and thus wraps around your head, you can hold it in place using clear bobby pins securing the fabric to your hair. Curlier afros can mask these pins well by pulling strategic curls forward to rest over them.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can instantly change the look of your afro from casual to formal by wearing a headband with affixed silk flowers, jewels or lace detail.

  • Make sure your afro is well-moisturized before wearing a headband. The added moisture will help you pull back the front of your afro to be secured by the headband. Also, the fabric on a headband may tug on your hair and chafe your scalp, causing breakage if your hair is too dry. The most beautiful headband won't distract from a matted, unkempt afro. Keeping your afro in good condition will dramatically enhance the effect of a great headband.
