The Apple iMac computer is set up much differently than a PC, since all of its internal components are in a single place connected directly to the monitor. In the event that the hard drive has stopped working properly or you find that you need additional file storage space, you can open up the iMac's casing and replace the hard drive with a different one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off the iMac and unplug the power cable from the wall as well as any other cables connected to any peripheral devices. Turn the iMac computer around so that the back end is facing toward you, and then flip it over so that the bottom end is facing upward.

  2. Step 2

Remove the two screws on the right and left ends at the very top of the iMac. Pull out the screw that holds the white plastic panel into place that is filled with air holes.

  3. Step 3

Pull the plastic panel off, and then take out the screws underneath it. Turn the computer around so that you can see the screen.

  4. Step 4

Lift up on the three locking hooks located just above the CD drive at the top of the monitor screen, and then pull the entire plastic casing off the iMac.

  5. Step 5

Remove the screws located at the top, bottom and side ends of the inner plastic casing and then pull the case off.

  6. Step 6

Remove the power cable from the hard drive and then pull out the ATA cable that connects to the motherboard. Pull out the four screws that hold the hard drive to its metal drive bay.

  7. Step 7

Grab the front of the hard drive that is protruding from the drive bay and slide the entire unit out. Slide the replacement hard drive into the bay.

  8. Step 8

Attach the power cable and ATA cable into the replacement hard drive, and then put the four screws back in. Put the inner plastic cover back on the iMac and put all of the screws back into place.

  9. Step 9

Set the outer plastic case back onto the iMac and reconnect all of its screws. Place the computer back into its normal upright position, and then plug the power cable back in. Power the iMac back on and wait for it to finish loading up to ensure that everything is working properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Touch any metal object nearby that is connected to the floor to release the built-up static electricity in your body before you open the iMac case.
  • The screws on an iMac can easily fall inside the inner portion of the case, so either use a magnetized screwdriver or have a parts retrieval tool handy to pick up dropped screws from cramped locations.
