Get a Stool Sample From a Dog With Diarrhea

There are numerous reasons why a dog might have loose or watery stools. When a dog has an extended period of diarrhea it is important to bring him to the veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. In addition to a physical examination, the vet will most likely request a stool sample. Because the sample will not be solid, it might be a bit more difficult to obtain; however, using common household packaging products can make the collection process a bit easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn a sandwich-sized plastic zip-top bag inside out.

    • 2

      Place bag over your hand.

    • 3

Find a fresh stool sample in your yard. To obtain the most accurate testing results, the sample should be as fresh as possible.

    • 4

Scoop about a tablespoon of the diarrhea sample carefully into the bag. You don't need to obtain a large sample. The vet will only need a small amount for testing. Try not to get too much grass or other foreign matter into the sample, if possible. However, if this happens, don't worry too much, the vet will most likely be able to get a by with what you have collected.

    • 5

Pull bag off hand carefully. As you do this, the bag should automatically flip back to its original position.

    • 6

Seal the zip-top top and place bag in a disposable plastic container.

    • 7

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after you are finished collecting the sample.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you will not be visiting the vet immediately, place sample in the refrigerator and clearly mark the container.
